The initiative aims to promote entrepreneurship among university students and support the' creation, validation, and market launch of innovative ideas. The competition provides a platform for young teams to receive honest feedback from international mentors, investors, and experts, while building relationships with like-minded young people and professionals in the startup ecosystem.
The significance of the Danube Cup lies in the fact that it is not just a competition, but also an active community-building initiative. Connecting the Danube region's countries creates opportunities to learn about different national entrepreneurial cultures and methodologies, adopt best practices, and establish long-term professional collaborations. Participating teams present their ideas and learn from each other, from the jury, and through the training and mentoring opportunities available during the program. The Danube Cup has grown and expanded year after year, and has now become one of the region's leading university startup competitions.
Competition structure and participation opportunities
The Danube Cup competition takes place in a multi-stage system. In the first stage, universities in the participating countries organise national preliminary rounds, where the most promising startup teams are selected. These teams then present their ideas in an international online semifinal, from which the best teams advance to the international final, which takes place in person. They can present their startups to a prestigious jury of international experts and investors here.
The conditions for participating in the competition:
Teams can have 2 to 5 members.
The majority of team members must be active students at one of the participating higher education institutions.
The startup idea must reflect a real market problem and cannot be based on an already launched product or service—in other words, it must be based on a new, original innovation.
The idea must already be validated to some extent—for example, in the form of a prototype, testing, or target group feedback.
To apply, teams must submit two main documents:
A video in English, no longer than 3 minutes, presenting the essence of the startup idea, the problem to be solved, the experiences gained during validation, and why the idea fits into the Duna Cup environment.
A well-structured pitch deck that includes the key elements of the business concept: problem, solution, target market, competitors, business model, team, roadmap, and financial projections.
In the final, teams can present their ideas to real investors and startup experts, allowing them to win prizes, future collaborations, and support. The Danube Cup is therefore not just a competition, but a real springboard for young entrepreneurs.
